Courier Bag Packaging: A Beginner’s Guide

Courier Bags. Poly mailers. Mailing bags. Parcel bags. Shipping bags. Flyers. Mailing Flyers.

Whatever you call them, they have gained a lot of popularity for online sellers.

The packaging you use to ship your goods are often underestimated and overlooked in the logistics of your business. It’s just a poly mailer, right?

Not exactly.

That poly mailer, custom or not, is the only touchpoint between you and your customer for the entire transaction. Getting the right poly mailer for the size, thickness and colour is key to making sure your product is presentable at its destination. So, how do you go about choosing the right poly mailer?

First, let’s get down to the basics.

What are Courier Bags?

Courier bags, also known as poly mailers, are made from multi-layer polyethylene film material, which is durable, lightweight and moisture resistant for effective protection.

Unlike corrugated boxes, there’s no need for packing tape with poly mailers. Each mailer includes a self-adhesive strip, making it easy to pack goods and seal packages. Because of their strong and malleable polyethylene material, courier bags can be packed full (even overpacked) and still remain secure as they arrive in perfect condition, at all your customer’s doorstep. They are ideal for clothes, books, shoes, toys, non-fragile items or more durable items and pre-packaged goods.

Choosing the Right Courier Bag Size

Courier bags are available in many sizes. The smallest size runs 17x32cm whilst the largest can go up to 50x65cm at Stellarpac. It’s important that you choose the right sized courier bag to ensure the item you are shipping reaches its destination intact. The right sized courier bag allows enough space and room for your product. However, it can be difficult to visualize whether your product can fit into the poly mailer.

Simply measure your product and add two centimeters on each side of your item.

Thickness

A courier bag’s thickness is measured by micron (µ) or millimeter (mm). Just like finding the right sized poly mailer, the thickness of your poly mailer is just as important. The variations of thickness include 0.08mm, 0.10mm and 0.14mm. The thickness of your polymailer is heavily dependent on the type and weight of the product you sell.

If your items are lightweight, such as clothes, you can opt for a poly mailer with a thickness of 0.08mm. Heavier duty items that require extra strength, it would be ideal to choose a poly mailer with a thickness of 0.10mm. For items that require the strongest protection, a poly mailer with a thickness of 0.14mm would be the best.

Colour

By default, poly mailers come in available colours such as white, black or pink. These colours make excellent canvases. Depending on what your brand is looking for, the look of a white poly mailer creates an impression of cleanliness and professionalism to your customers. Besides the already available colours, you also have the option of customizing your brand logo, colour and design onto the poly mailers

To Wrap This Up…

Now that you have some knowledge on courier bags, you can understand why they continue to be a popular shipping choice. From choosing the right size, thickness and colour, you, as an online seller, are able to ship your products easily, effectively and on the cheap.
